How it works

Single Cylinder Volume

Cylinder volume equals pi times bore radius squared times stroke length. Bore and stroke must be in the same units (inches or mm).

V = π × (Bore/2)² × Stroke

Total Displacement

Multiply single cylinder volume by number of cylinders. For V engines, each bank contributes half the total cylinders.

Total = V × Number of cylinders

1 liter = 61.024 cubic inches. 1 cubic inch = 16.387 cc. Common conversions: 350 CI = 5.7L, 302 CI = 4.95L, 454 CI = 7.4L.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using bore diameter instead of radius in the formula

The formula uses bore radius (bore ÷ 2), not diameter. Using full bore diameter overestimates displacement by 4×.

Mixing metric and imperial units without conversion

Convert all measurements to the same unit before calculating. 86mm bore with 3.48-inch stroke requires converting one unit — 86mm = 3.386 inches.
