How it works

Calculate each exit pupil

Divide effective objective diameter in millimetres by magnification. For example, 42/8 gives 5.25 mm, while 42/10 gives 4.2 mm. Use the effective optical aperture, not the outside diameter of the barrel.

Read the comparison direction

The signed diameter difference is A minus B; positive means A has the larger calculated exit pupil. The magnification ratio is B divided by A, so 10× compared with 8× gives 1.25. This is an angular magnification ratio, not a brightness gain.

Keep geometry separate from viewing performance

Exit pupil interacts with the observer’s eye pupil and light conditions. This calculator does not measure either. It also has no instrument transmission, eye-placement or image-quality data. A larger calculated diameter is not an automatic quality rating.

Use field-of-view specifications separately

Magnification and objective diameter do not specify a binocular’s true angular field. Compare published field-of-view values at the same reference distance, or use the separate field-width tool with a known angle.

Inferring field of view from the two input numbers

Use a measured or published true field; the eyepiece and optical design matter.

Instrument A has a calculated 5.25 mm exit pupil and B has 4.2 mm. In the example the difference A−B is +1.05 mm.

No. The calculation compares geometry only and has no measurements of your eye, light conditions or the instruments’ performance.

The example divides B’s 10× magnification by A’s 8×. It does not mean 25% more light or a 25% wider field.

Yes. Equal exit pupils give a zero diameter difference; matching specifications do not prove matching optical quality.
