How it works

Calculate the geometry of a flat circle

Convert the radius to metres, then calculate area as πr², circumference as 2πr and diameter as 2r. Radius is the center-to-edge distance. Zero radius gives zero area and dimensions. The model is planar: it does not calculate terrain surface area or a geodesic buffer on Earth.

Keep length and area units explicit

One international foot is exactly 0.3048 m and one international mile is 1609.344 m. Area in hectares is square metres divided by 10000; square kilometres use 1000000. International acres here use 43560 international square feet, or 4046.8564224 m². This is not the legacy U.S. survey-foot acre listed separately in older conversion tables.

Choose eBird locations from the actual checklist

eBird’s guidance says the selected hotspot should describe the location of the entire checklist; otherwise use a more appropriate hotspot or a personal location. A circle calculated here cannot decide that. The tool does not retrieve hotspot maps, boundaries or checklists.

Separate geometric area from observation effort

A circular plot area does not prove that every bird within it was detectable or counted. Circumference is the mathematical perimeter, not a recorded route distance. Use the actual survey protocol, access information and field observations when reporting effort.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Entering diameter as radius

Radius is half the diameter. Entering diameter doubles the radius and produces four times the intended area.

Treating the circle as an eBird boundary

Use the actual named hotspot and eBird location guidance. The calculator has no hotspot boundary data.

Reporting circumference as distance traveled

Use your measured route for traveled distance. The circle perimeter is only a geometric dimension.
