How it works

Start with incubation, not automatically the first egg

Laying and effective incubation are different events. Their timing varies by species. Enter a supported start interval; use equal dates when the start is known. If you only know when an egg was found, that alone may not establish an incubation-start interval.

American robin reference

The American robin preset uses the Cornell Lab reference interval of 12–14 days. This species reference is not a guarantee for an individual egg.

The Mallard preset uses 23–30 days from the Cornell Lab. It applies to the named species, not all ducks or domestic breeds.

Bald eagle reference

The bald eagle preset uses the published 34–36-day interval. Eggs in a nest need not start incubation or hatch at the same time; the window is not a prediction of when a whole clutch finishes hatching.

Domestic chicken reference

The poultry extension reference lists 21 days for chickens. The preset treats this as a nominal duration. A single calculated date with a known start is still an estimate, not a promise of hatching or a diagnosis of fertility.

Combine two explicit intervals

The earliest endpoint is earliest start plus minimum elapsed days; the latest is latest start plus maximum elapsed days. The start date is elapsed day zero: April 10 plus 12 days is April 22. The endpoint span equals the start-date span plus the duration span. It is not a statistical confidence interval. Custom ranges require a species/source note and whole-day limits from 1 to 365; these are input limits, not biological guidance.

Use calendar dates across years

Date arithmetic follows the Gregorian calendar, including February 29 in leap years and December-to-January rollover. Inputs and outputs use years 0001–9999. Calculations operate on date-only values without daylight-saving shifts; they do not model an exact hatch hour. The result and CSV retain dates, duration, reference and estimate status.

For a robin incubation start estimated as April 10–12, 2026, combine 12–14 days to obtain a modeled April 22–26 window. Keep the actual observed hatch date in a separate record.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using the first egg date or discovery date as a certain incubation start

Use observation or species-specific evidence to establish the incubation start. Unknown timing should remain unknown.

Treating the latest endpoint as a failure deadline

These are typical or user-supplied durations, not guaranteed bounds. The result cannot establish nonviability, abandonment or a need to intervene.

Counting the start as one completed day

This calculator counts elapsed days: the start is day zero and the next calendar date is one day later. Check the convention in any reference you use.

Using a modeled date as an observed event or a nest-visit schedule

Label estimates separately from observations. Follow established monitoring guidance; a calculator cannot identify a safe visit date.

Effective incubation may begin after laying starts, and timing differs among species and eggs. Adding a duration to the first egg date can therefore give a misleading date.
