How it works

Set character and effective speed

Character speed c sets dot=1200/c milliseconds. Standard mode uses the same effective speed. Farnsworth mode accepts effective speed s no greater than c.

Separate character rhythm from spacing

The PARIS calibration has 31 character-body units and 19 outer-spacing units. Spacing unit=(60000/s−31×dot)/19; letter and word gaps use three and seven spacing units.

Time the actual scenario

Sum actual symbol bodies and gaps across every repetition. Copies are separated by a word gap; omit or include only the last gap as selected. Preview one copy while the report totals all copies.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using a pie chart to add alternative timing intervals

Dot, dash, letter gap and word gap describe different events. Review their durations and actual event counts instead.

Treating calculated duration as operator proficiency

The model does not measure sending, reception, equipment latency, licensing or emergency readiness.

FAQ

Standard timing gives a 60 ms dot, 180 ms dash, 60 ms inner gap, 180 ms character gap and 420 ms word gap. PARIS plus its final gap takes three seconds.

No. The referenced ARRL paper describes its historical 18 WPM practice but states that other character speeds can be used. Here both speeds are explicit and effective speed cannot exceed character speed.

No. PARIS is a calibration word. This calculator counts your actual Morse symbols and boundaries; E and PARIS do not take equal time.

Copies always have one word gap between them. The final-gap choice affects only the last copy. Character gaps are not added on top of word gaps.
