How it works

Choose one source entry

Chickadee and house wren values come from the Pacific Northwest table in Oregon State University Extension EC1556. Bluebird values come from the TWRA NABS drawing. Screech-owl values come from Art Gingert’s Fall 2021 plan. These entries use different measurement conventions; they are not interchangeable building standards.

Preserve shape and measurement basis

An oval is reported as width × height; a circular entrance is reported by diameter. Floor pieces and panel heights are labelled as such and do not establish assembled interior dimensions. The OSU entries retain its bottom and side-height labels.

Convert units and account for documented stock

Millimetres = inches × 25.4 exactly. For the Gingert plan, trim width is 11.25 inches minus twice actual board thickness: 9⅝ inches with 13/16-inch stock or 9¾ inches with ¾-inch stock. The drawn floor length remains 9⅝ inches in this reference; follow the plan’s test-fitting instructions. Display precision is not a cutting tolerance.

Example Scenarios

Record the manufacturer’s actual measurement basis before comparing its dimensions with a named drawing or table.

Convert a documented entrance or panel measurement without losing its shape or source label.

Choose a complete plan and review its material, assembly, mounting and maintenance instructions before making a cut list.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using an oval’s height as a circular-hole diameter

The TWRA bluebird oval is 1⅜ × 2¼ inches; its round alternative is 1½ inches in diameter.

Treating a floor-piece size as verified interior space

Check how walls, recesses and stock thickness affect the assembled box in the complete drawing.

Assuming dimensions guarantee a suitable nest site

Match local species and habitat, then separately review mounting, predator protection, ventilation and monitoring.

FAQ

No. It is a reference to selected dimensions. Use the linked complete plan for cuts, slopes, joints, drainage, ventilation and access.

Black-capped chickadee and house wren from OSU’s regional table, eastern bluebird from TWRA’s NABS drawing, and eastern screech-owl from Art Gingert’s plan.

That source explicitly documents trim widths for two actual stock thicknesses. This tool does not extrapolate undocumented alternatives for the other entries.

Select a suitable plan specifically documented for the species and location. Similar body size does not establish that these dimensions are appropriate.

The result includes the selected source, measurement labels, entrance shape, unit conversion and interpretation limits. Keep those details with the dimensions.

About Nest Box Plan Dimension Reference

Choose a named source entry to inspect its bottom or floor-piece dimensions, panel height and entrance opening. The result preserves the source’s measurement labels and documented alternatives. Open the complete source before choosing materials or cutting parts.
