Roofing Calculator

Plan exact roof-covering packages from measured same-pitch plan area, entered pitch, explicit allowance, exact package coverage, and price.

Use this result well

Inputs that matter
Measured horizontal plan area for same-pitch planes, entered rise per 12, explicit area allowance, exact selected-package coverage and price
Output to expect
Slope multiplier, measured/planned sloped area and roofing squares, whole packages, purchased coverage and entered package cost
How it works
Apply the geometric pitch multiplier, then only the entered allowance, and divide by exact installed package coverage
  • Survey every plane/pitch and verify deck condition, local code, product approval/instructions, slope, wind/fire classification, underlayment/ice barrier, starter/ridge, flashing, penetrations, drainage and ventilation.
  • Complete fastener, access/fall-protection, delivery, staging, tear-off and disposal plans with qualified parties; this result covers one primary package only.

Choose your path

Built around the job you need to finish

Convert measured same-pitch roof plan area to primary-covering packages using exact product coverage and explicit allowance without producing a roof-system or safety plan.

Homeowner checking a contractor takeoff

Audit pitch-adjusted surface area without assuming building floor area.

Enter measured same-pitch plan area, pitch and documented allowance.

Gets transparent measured/planned squares rather than a generic roof recommendation.

Estimator using an exact shingle package

Avoid a universal three-bundles-per-square assumption.

Copy installed package coverage and current package price from the selected product/quote.

Gets whole packages and scoped cost tied to that exact coverage.

Roofing professional separating system components

Keep primary covering arithmetic from hiding critical assemblies and safety.

Use the result only after plane survey, then complete code/product, flashing, ventilation and fall-protection plans.

Does not treat package count as an installable roof system.

Reference & details

How it works

Measured sloped area

Same-pitch horizontal plan area converts to sloped surface using the geometric pitch multiplier.

Sloped area = plan area × √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²)

Explicit planned area

Only the entered roof-layout allowance expands measured sloped surface area.

Planned area = sloped area × (1 + entered allowance%)

Exact package conversion

Planned area divides by exact installed package coverage and rounds upward to whole packages.

Packages = ceil(planned area ÷ exact package coverage)

Example Scenarios

A homeowner audits same-pitch plan area, slope multiplier and explicit allowance.

An estimator compares package counts only after entering installed coverage for each selected product.

A roofer records primary covering packages while keeping starter, ridge, underlayment, flashing and ventilation takeoffs separate.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Assuming building footprint equals all roof plan area

Measure every included plane’s horizontal projection and run different pitches separately.

Assuming universal waste or three bundles per square

Enter a project-specific allowance and exact selected-package installed coverage.

FAQ

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Package count still depends on the exact selected product’s installed coverage.

Use the actual roof layout, hips, valleys, cuts, damage reserve, product instructions and supplier/contractor plan. No standard percentage is added.

For a uniformly pitched plane it converts horizontal plan area to sloped surface area using √(1 + (rise/12)²). Run different pitches separately.

Bundles per square and installed coverage vary by product. Copy the exact selected package data rather than assuming three bundles.

Survey, deck repair, code/product approval, underlayment, ice barrier, starter/ridge, flashing, penetrations, drainage, ventilation, fasteners, fall protection, labor and disposal.

About Roofing Calculator
