Build an Author Platform Readers Can Use

Create a useful reader home, test an optional signup path, plan sustainable writing and review newsletter reports with clear measurement definitions.

Workflow

  1. Define the reader and a useful reason to return

Describe the readers you want to serve, the work they can find now and the question or interest that connects them to your writing. Choose one primary return path, such as a publication page or an optional newsletter. Define a small useful outcome for the next release rather than starting with a follower target.

  2. Build a clear author home and signup path

Create a stable page with your name or pen name, accurate bio, available work, accessible reading samples and a clear next action. If offering email updates, explain their content and expected cadence, capture the permission required for those messages, and test signup, confirmation where used, delivery and unsubscribe behavior in your chosen service.

  3. Plan work around the reader’s task and your capacity

Choose the next article, sample or author update and write its purpose and evidence needs. Set an editorial word target and use a comparable measured drafting pace to estimate the remaining writing work. Allow separately for research, revision, accessibility, links and publishing. A useful short piece can be complete when it answers the intended task.

  4. Check a complete announcement and reader journey

Draft an announcement with the actual title, link and relevant context. Use the publishing editor with the destination field or your own stated budget; count the entire message and verify the final composer. Walk through the link on a phone and keyboard, read the sample and test the chosen return action. Check that the page accurately describes what is available.

  5. Review reader actions with consistent definitions

For one newsletter send, record unique sent/delivered recipients and unique reported openers/clickers at the same cutoff and filtering settings. Calculate open rate and click rate using delivered recipients; keep click-to-open separate. Pair the report with replies, reading-path problems and actual actions relevant to your writing.

  6. Choose the next useful release and retain the plan

Use reader questions and observed friction to select one improvement or next piece. Record the owner, realistic release window and what evidence will be reviewed afterward. Refresh broken links and outdated bio/work information, maintain subscriber preferences in the mailing platform and download your editorial notes and message backups.

Reference Materials

Content should answer the reader’s needStandard

Google’s people-first guidance asks whether content helps its intended audience and explicitly rejects a preferred word-count rule. Use evidence, clarity and a completed reader task to decide when the piece is ready.

Respect the mailing service’s permission requirementsStandard

Mailchimp distinguishes contact permission levels and requires senders to respect them. Use the rules and preference controls of your chosen service for the actual messages you send.

Reported opens and clicks have limitsStandard

Mailchimp explains how open/click reporting works and how privacy tools and automated activity can affect it. Record your provider’s definitions and filtering settings when comparing sends.

Reader journey reviewTable

Check the actual path from an announcement to a useful return action.

StageQuestion to verify
AnnouncementDoes the message accurately describe the linked work?
ReadingCan a reader reach and use the content on their device?
ReturnIs signup or the next piece easy to find and optional?
EvidenceWhat did readers do or ask, under what measurement definition?
Next releaseWhich concrete improvement follows from that evidence?
  • Use feedback to choose the next piece

A specific reader question often gives a more useful next task than a generic growth target.

  • Separate audience and sales

Measure a purchase through its actual sales record. Subscriber count and open rate do not predict royalties.
