Kitesurf Body Dragging: Lesson, Board Recovery and Exit Plan

Prepare supervised body-drag practice with water-entry skills, a board-recovery objective, suitable conditions and a clear exit and assistance plan.

Workflow

  1. Review the prerequisites with an instructor

Confirm the kite-control, safety-system and water-entry skills needed for this lesson. Discuss swimming confidence and the actual water conditions. Ask how the instructor will maintain supervision and provide assistance; a person watching from shore is not automatically an effective rescue plan.

  2. Set the practice area and exits

Identify wind, tide, current, other water users and the exit points with the instructor. Agree where the exercise ends if drift increases or the intended exit becomes unusable. Select suitable flotation, clothing and communication for the lesson and local requirements before entering the water.

  3. Learn the progression without chasing equipment

Follow the instructor’s progression from stable kite control in water to directional body dragging. Introduce the board when the prerequisite control is established. In this beginner pathway, do not add a board leash as a shortcut to learning board recovery; IKO specifically warns against board-leash injuries.

  4. Practice the board-recovery task

Agree the recovery objective and the instructor’s stop signal. Follow the demonstrated method while monitoring the actual position relative to the exit. If the board cannot be recovered within the agreed area, use the assistance plan; protecting a person takes priority over retrieving equipment.

  5. End the exercise before control deteriorates

Tell the instructor when breathing, orientation, fatigue or kite control becomes difficult. Follow the taught exit or incident procedure instead of extending a chase. A fixed time target or successful previous attempt does not justify continuing in changed conditions.

  6. Record skills and the next lesson

Note the directions practiced, assistance needed, lost-board response and exit used. Separate controlled body dragging from successful board recovery and water relaunch. Have the instructor identify which skill to repeat before attempting a water start.

Reference Materials

Use the exact equipment manual and qualified instruction for handling. The linked materials support preparation, topic progression and review; the checklist does not certify independent competence.

  • Keep the conditions with the record

Save the plan and record date, equipment, actual conditions and assistance needed. Recheck the checklist for each session; a completed earlier review does not approve today’s conditions.

Safety Notes

  • Use qualified kitesurf instruction and a session-specific assistance and exit plan. Do not practice in offshore winds or conditions beyond the lesson’s limits.
  • Keep people clear of powered lines and use the safety procedures taught for the exact equipment.
