Carving Practice: Coaching, Control and Review

Plan carving practice with an instructor, suitable terrain and one clear task; distinguish ski geometry from actual turns and record useful feedback.

Workflow

  1. Set a coaching goal from your current skiing

    Describe where you can link turns and stop under control, which conditions cause difficulty and what you want to improve. Arrange instruction appropriate to that starting point. Ask the instructor to observe your skiing before selecting a carving task. Agree on an outcome you can describe, such as following the chosen turn shape while retaining control. A season count or target edge angle does not show readiness, and increasing speed is not the default way to improve.

  2. Agree on terrain, space and equipment readiness

    With the instructor, choose an open run with suitable pitch, visibility, surface and room for the planned task. Identify the practice corridor and visible stopping places before starting. Reassess when traffic or conditions change. Report equipment damage, unexpected behavior or fit concerns and have shop staff address service questions. Do not change a tune or binding setting to chase an exercise result. Keep the local Responsibility Code and resort directions part of every attempt.

  3. Separate the geometry model from the movement task

    Use the linked edge-geometry tool only to understand its stated reference model. Ideal radius from ski tilt assumes a rigid planar sidecut in full contact; real turns also depend on the snow, ski behavior and how the skier moves. Horizontal-turn force inclination is measured from vertical and is a different quantity from ski tilt relative to snow. Ask your instructor which movement and observation matter for this task. No calculated angle or radius is an on-snow performance target.

  4. Try one demonstrated task with clear boundaries

    Ask the instructor to demonstrate the selected task and identify one cue for your attempt. Repeat back where you will start, the intended line and where you will stop. Make the attempt only when the corridor is clear, then meet at the agreed stopping point for feedback. The instructor can adapt the movement, terrain or task to what they observe. Avoid stacking several technical cues at once; write down the one being tested so you can compare attempts meaningfully.

  5. Review control and observations after each attempt

    Discuss whether you maintained the intended line and stopping control, and what changed between attempts. Record the instructor’s observation separately from how the turn felt. Tracks may contribute context but do not alone establish technique quality. If using video, agree on consent and a stationary recording position that remains visible and clear of traffic. Pause when fatigue or crowding affects the task. Choose another attempt, an easier task or a break with the instructor rather than chasing a cleaner-looking track.

  6. Carry a specific practice note to the next session

    Record the run, conditions, equipment, demonstrated task, useful cue and observed result. Ask the instructor what to repeat independently and what needs further coaching, including terrain limits for the practice. At the next session, check whether conditions and control still suit that plan before repeating it. Change one practice variable at a time when appropriate. Retain unsuccessful attempts and the reason for stopping; they help explain the next adjustment as much as a successful turn does.
