Room Color and Paint Planning

Compare paint samples under real room lighting, measure separate faces, estimate one exact coating and save product evidence with preparation questions.

Workflow

  1. Define the room, surfaces and lighting

List the room’s activities, existing finishes and surfaces you intend to paint. Record which daylight and lamps are normally present. Identify any preparation questions before disturbing an existing coating, especially where lead paint may be present.

  2. Compare physical paint samples in the room

Label candidate samples with the exact color, product and finish. Prepare samples according to their instructions and observe them beside existing materials under the room’s usual daylight and artificial lighting. Record which sample you prefer and why.

  3. Measure faces and estimate the selected coating

In Paint Calculator, enter each independent rectangular face, its own excluded openings and its planned coat count. Use the exact product’s current spread-rate evidence, actual container size and verified matching stock. Keep different coatings, colors or finishes in separate records.

  4. Review the record before purchasing or applying

Check the measured area, coats, coverage range and whole-container estimate against the selected product and scope. Keep preparation, primer, ventilation, drying and recoat decisions with the current manufacturer instructions. Save the color choice, sample observations and quantity record together.

Color samples under changing lightStandard

Benjamin Moore’s color handbook recommends observing physical paint samples in the room as lighting changes. Use this sampling principle with the instructions for the product you select; the source link does not make a particular brand or hue necessary.

Worked quantity example: one face, illustrative ratesFormula

Illustration only: a 12 ft × 8 ft face minus 21 ft² of openings gives 75 ft². Two planned coats give 150 coat-ft². At an assumed 250–400 ft²/US gal per coat, base volume is 150/400 to 150/250 = 0.375–0.600 US gal. With zero allowance, reserve and stock, either endpoint requires one 1-US-gal container. Replace every assumption with your measured scope and exact product evidence.

Existing paint and lead-safe preparationSafety

US EPA warns that renovation in pre-1978 homes with lead-based paint can create hazardous dust and recommends a lead-safe certified contractor. Determine the existing coating and applicable local requirements before sanding or scraping. A paint quantity estimate does not resolve that preparation decision.

Room color decision recordTable

Keep this summary alongside the calculator’s downloaded coating record.

RecordYour note
Room and scope[activities, faces, existing materials and exclusions]
Selected sample[exact product, color, finish and sample observations]
Lighting observations[daylight and actual lamp settings compared]
Quantity record[measurement revision, product evidence and saved file]
Open decisions[preparation, primer, application or purchase questions and responsible person]
  • Keep a product-specific record

An accent wall and the main walls can need different products or spread rates. Preserve their separate records instead of combining them under one assumed paint rate.

Safety Notes

  • Use current product labels, technical data and safety data for preparation, ventilation and application. A room color choice carries no promise of a healing effect.
