Home Music Recording: Setup, Levels, Mix and Export

Plan a home recording session, test input headroom, compare mixes, estimate PCM storage and save a checklist for export and backup.

Workflow

  1. Define the recording and test the space

    Allow time for a short test and review

    Choose a concrete first deliverable, such as a solo song demo, and list the sources you need to record simultaneously. Inventory compatible microphones, interface inputs, cables, headphones, computer and software before buying anything. Make a short test at the intended position and listen for background noise and room sound.

  2. Set up routing and a recoverable session

    Create a clearly named project and confirm the audio device, input channel, sample rate and recording format in your software. Test the monitoring route at low volume. Choose direct or software input monitoring deliberately, and check that backing tracks and the live input are heard as intended. Save a separate backup of the working session.

  3. Set gain with a real performance test

    Record a representative loud passage, check the input meter for overload and listen back for clipping, noise and unwanted sound. Adjust the input stage and repeat the test. If comparing peak margin, enter a measured sample peak or true peak and a ceiling on the same scale in the Audio Headroom Calculator.

  4. Edit and compare at matched listening levels

    Keep original takes, label useful versions and make edits that serve the arrangement. Balance levels and panning before adding processing; compare changes with bypass and a suitably level-matched reference. Check the mix in mono and on another playback system, listening for missing parts, clicks and poor translation.

  5. Export to the actual delivery specification

    Read the recipient or distributor’s current requirements for format, sample rate, channel layout, peak level, loudness, metadata and artwork. Export a new file and listen to it from start to finish outside the project. For byte-aligned uncompressed PCM, estimate storage with the actual rate, stored bits, channels, duration and container overhead.

  6. Verify the handoff and preserve the session

    Check file names, start and end points, channel content and required credits or permissions. Keep the editable project, original recordings, final exports and notes about software or plug-ins together in a documented archive. Open a backup copy to confirm it can be used, and keep another copy separately.

Recording gain and monitoringStandard

Export, backup and platform behaviorStandard

Audacity distinguishes export settings from project backup. Spotify describes playback normalization and mastering guidance; its normal playback level is not a universal upload format or a rule for every service. Check the actual delivery specification.

Listening exposureStandard

WHO explains that sound level, exposure duration and repeated exposure all matter. Lower volume and take breaks away from noise.

  • Change one thing and keep a version

    Label takes and mix versions so you can compare placement, gain or processing without losing the starting point.

  • Measure after the final change

    A gain change, processor or encoding step can change the result. Use the exported file for the final check rather than relying on an earlier meter reading.

Safety Notes

  • Keep monitoring volume low and take quiet breaks. Stop loud exposure if you notice discomfort, ringing or muffled hearing; seek hearing care when symptoms persist. A dBFS or dBTP calculation does not measure sound exposure at your ears.
  • Secure microphone and speaker stands, route cables away from walking paths and keep ventilation and exits clear. Follow equipment instructions for power and connections.
  • Keep original recordings and a separate backup before destructive edits, cleanup or conversion. Verify the backup can be opened.
