Workflow

  1. Choose and trim pickling cucumbers

Use the size and quantity in the linked recipe. Wash the cucumbers and remove the blossom-end slice as directed. Prepare the first salt-water soak separately from the final pickling solution.

  2. Complete the soak and drain

Follow the recipe’s 12-hour soak, then drain. Measure the new pickling solution from its own ingredient list; do not reuse the soak or assume a universal vinegar-to-water ratio.

  3. Pack and add hot pickling solution

Use vinegar labeled 5% acidity and the exact water, salt and seasoning quantities for this recipe. Add the specified dill and mustard seed, cover with boiling solution, and leave ½-inch headspace.

  4. Process and label the batch

Use the boiling-water schedule below and the full canner method. Cool undisturbed, check seals and record the recipe and date. Assess flavor after following the recipe’s storage directions.

The pre-soak is discarded. The final pickling solution is mixed separately from 5%-acidity vinegar, water and the other specified ingredients. Use the full recipe; neither a salt calculator nor a pH reading recreates it.

  • Keep the vinegar label

The 5% value describes the purchased vinegar, not a requirement that the finished mixed brine remain 5% acid.

  • Choose one processing method

This guide uses boiling water. The source’s optional low-temperature treatment requires its own complete instructions.

Safety Notes

  • Do not weaken the recipe’s acid mixture or substitute homemade vinegar of unknown acidity.
  • Do not taste a jar with signs of spoilage to diagnose its brine.
