Describe the course or dives you are preparing for, your training and the expected environment to the instructor or dive operator. Ask for their required kit list and which items they provide. Separate equipment you need now from later purchases. Record any accessibility, comfort, transport or storage needs so that the shortlist reflects the actual use rather than a generic package.
For each item, record the exact model, size, condition, included accessories and dated quote. Ask what fitting, service, rental replacement and return arrangements are included. Compare the same period of use and keep deposits separate from expected expense. Include maintenance and transport in the purchase option. Leave unknown future resale value unconfirmed; the lowest initial price does not settle fit or support.
Arrange a fitting with the actual exposure protection and accessories you will use. With qualified staff, review mask comfort, fin and boot fit, suit movement, BCD adjustment and access to controls and releases. Have the shop verify the actual cylinder, valve, regulator, hose and other model-specific interfaces. Record unresolved items and alternatives. A size label or body-weight percentage cannot establish a complete equipment fit.
Ask the supplier to explain the equipment’s operating instructions, known condition and service records. Inspect accessible straps, buckles and visible surfaces for damage with staff, and have technical faults or missing service information resolved by a qualified service provider. Review the computer manual and how its controls are used within your training. Do not disassemble, repair or improvise connections to make an uncertain setup usable.

Report leaks, uncomfortable fit, unexpected behavior or difficulty reaching equipment, and pause to resolve the issue. Keep the actual equipment and exposure-protection details with the feedback. Record the selected model and size, fit observations, unresolved restrictions, provider advice and any required follow-up. Follow each manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning, drying, storage and service; different components need different handling. Keep manuals and service receipts together.
