Workflow

  1. Prepare Silk

    45 min

Scour silk gently to remove sericin if desired, or dye in natural state for different uptake.

  2. Extract Mushroom Dye

    2 hours

Create concentrated dye liquor; silk often dyes at lower temperature than wool.

  3. Low Temperature Dye

    1 hour

Hold silk in dye bath at 160–180°F, turning gently; shorter time prevents fiber damage.

  4. Finish and Press

    2 hours

Rinse in lukewarm water with drop of vinegar if alum mordant, air dry, press on silk setting.

  • Scald Risk

Silk dye baths still hot enough to burn — use tongs.

  • Iron Contact

Iron mordant contact spots permanently marks silk — clean pots.

  • Light Fading

Silk dyes fade faster in UV — store finished goods in dark.

Safety Notes

  • Silk becomes weak when wet — support full skein weight when lifting from pot.
  • Ventilate area when using ammonia modifiers.
