Underwater Navigation: Briefing, Practice and Route Notes

Prepare underwater navigation practice with a route briefing, compass familiarization, natural references and distance notes; retain instructor feedback.

Workflow

  1. Choose a supervised navigation objective

Tell the instructor which navigation tasks you have learned and what currently feels difficult. Agree on a suitable practice setting and one objective, such as recognizing a return landmark or following a demonstrated compass route. Review the site and team dive plan before selecting the exercise. Keep conditions within the training arrangement; low visibility, currents and overhead environments are not simply harder versions of a basic drill.

  2. Learn the actual compass and rehearse on land

Bring the compass you will use and its instructions. Ask the instructor to demonstrate its alignment, reading and holding position, and any calibration needed for that model. Rehearse the assigned heading changes on land and confirm what the displayed information means. Record recurring handling errors and the correction demonstrated. A digital compass does not automatically calculate a route back to the boat or shore.

  3. Brief the route, references and buddy roles

Sketch the instructor-approved route with its start and intended return point. Record the natural features to observe, each assigned leg and the agreed way to estimate distance. Distinguish a planned landmark from an assumption about what will be visible. Confirm who navigates, how the buddy team stays together and communicates, and which gas, time or condition boundaries end the exercise. Review the trained response to uncertainty or separation before entry.

  4. Practice the assigned route while maintaining awareness

Follow the instructor’s demonstration in the agreed setting, using compass information alongside the available natural references. Maintain the buoyancy, buddy contact and parameter checks required by the dive plan while navigating. Treat kick counts or elapsed time as observations from this exercise, not a universal distance conversion. Signal uncertainty and follow the briefed response rather than extending the route to chase a missing landmark.

  5. Compare observations with the intended route

After the exercise, sketch what you actually recognized and where it differed from the plan. Note missed features, compass-handling difficulties, distance estimates and any instructor assistance. Discuss possible causes with the instructor instead of assuming every discrepancy is a heading error. Record the conditions and equipment that accompanied the observations so another session can be compared meaningfully.

  6. Save the route notes and agree on the next exercise

Keep the route sketch, dated observations and instructor feedback together. Agree on the specific task to repeat or develop next, with the setting and supervision needed. Download this checklist as a preparation record; add your own sketch and session notes separately. Progress depends on demonstrated performance rather than a fixed number of weeks. The dive-log guide can hold the wider completed-dive record alongside this navigation debrief.

This guide organizes preparation and session records. Use the current course, instructor guidance and equipment instructions for the actual in-water procedures. Checklist completion records tasks only; it does not certify skill or authorize a different environment or dive.

  • Separate expectation from observation

Mark whether a landmark was expected, actually seen or still uncertain.

  • Keep the sketch with the log

A labeled sketch and a few specific observations are more useful than a generic navigation score.

Safety Notes

  • Practice within your training and the instructor’s plan. A route sketch or compass reading does not replace site knowledge, buddy procedures or the agreed gas and time boundaries.
