Tea Water Temperature: Measure and Adjust

Compare a tea recipe with kettle and vessel readings, check thermometer instructions and log cooling in your own setup.

Workflow

  1. Record the Tea-specific Target

    Write the tea name, method and producer temperature with its unit. Note whether the recipe specifies kettle water or water after transfer. Keep the dose and steep time fixed for the first comparison.

  2. Check the Measuring Instrument

    Read the thermometer immersion depth, response time and accuracy instructions. Perform the maker-recommended check; ThermoWorks describes a properly prepared ice bath. An ice-point check alone does not establish accuracy across all brewing temperatures.

  3. Account for Local Boiling Conditions

    Water does not boil at 100°C everywhere; altitude and air pressure affect the boiling point. If your local water boils below a recipe target, record the attainable temperature and seek a suitable recipe adjustment rather than heating indefinitely.

  4. Measure Transfer and Cooling

    Use the same water volume and vessel for each trial. Take readings at defined times after pouring while keeping the sensor away from vessel walls as its instructions require. Record whether the vessel was warmed.

  5. Repeat and Record a Useful Setting

    Brew at the measured starting condition, taste after comfortable cooling and note the result. Repeat with one deliberate change. Save the kettle setting, measured temperature, vessel and timing that produced the result you liked.
