How it works

Measure net mass and sample volume

Subtract the container tare from gross mass. Convert mass and dimensions to SI, square the length factor for area, and divide net mass by the original sample volume.

Keep water equivalent tied to sample scope

Use an explicit water reference density of 1,000 kg/m³. A selected layer produces layer water equivalent; whole-column SWE requires a complete sample of the entire snow depth at that spot. Density alone does not classify snow type or stability.

FAQ

Enter the net reading as gross mass and 0 as tare only if the scale was correctly tared. Do not subtract the same container mass twice.

This calculation reports only the material actually sampled. Select full snow column only when the whole depth at the sampled spot was recovered without loss. It does not extrapolate across a site.

The result exceeds the declared water reference density. Recheck units, container tare, sample dimensions, recovery and contamination. The flag does not identify the material as ice or slush.
