Salary Cap Space Formula

Remaining cap space equals the league salary budget minus total allocated player salaries including guaranteed compensation. In MLS, this includes base salary, guaranteed compensation, and amortized transfer fees.

Cap Space = Salary Budget − Total Allocated Salaries

Designated Player (DP) Slots

MLS allows 3 Designated Player slots where only the first $683,750 (2026) counts against cap — the rest is exempt. DP slots are the primary mechanism for signing star players while managing cap compliance.

GAM and TAM Allocation

General Allocation Money (GAM) and Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) can buy down cap hits. TAM allows signing players up to ~$803,125 with only a partial cap charge, effectively expanding roster-building flexibility.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Forgetting amortized transfer fees in cap calculations

MLS amortizes transfer fees over contract length against the cap. A $3M transfer on a 3-year deal adds $1M/year to cap hit. Always include amortization when evaluating whether a signing fits.

Not accounting for performance bonuses

Likely-to-be-earned (LTBE) bonuses count against cap; not-likely-to-be-earned (NLTBE) do not. Structure contracts carefully — heavy incentive packages can create mid-season cap violations if bonuses trigger.

Assuming all leagues use hard salary caps

Only MLS and A-League use hard caps. European leagues operate under FFP, wage-to-revenue ratios, or no cap at all. Apply the correct financial framework for your league.
