How it works

Whole cents and program units

All USD inputs allow up to two decimal places and are converted to integer cents. Award and source points must be positive whole numbers; unrelated program balances are never added together.

Cash difference in cents = cash cents − award cash cents − extra cash cents

Adjusted quote comparison

Estimated forgone benefits reduce only the adjusted difference. The unadjusted ratio and actual award cash remain visible. Ratios are rounded to four decimals; tiny nonzero values use scientific notation.

Adjusted cents per award point = (cash difference in cents − estimated benefit cents) / award points

Transfer denominator

For an award entirely funded by the entered source debit, divide the same adjusted difference by source points. The entered award-to-source ratio is descriptive, not a verified promotion or an instruction to transfer.

Adjusted cents per source point = adjusted difference in cents / source points

Example Scenarios

Hypothetical cash and award options for the same itinerary, with no extra cash costs or estimated forgone benefits.

Cash price: 450Award cash: 50Award points: 25000

$400 cash difference; 1.6000 cents per award point. The award still requires $50 cash.

Use a $300 alternative you would actually buy instead of a $450 headline quote.

Cash price: 300Award cash: 50Award points: 25000

$250 cash difference; 1.0000 cents per award point.

A hypothetical 20,000 source-point debit funds all 25,000 award points. Add $10 transfer cash and $20 estimated forgone benefits.

Cash price: 450Award cash: 50Additional cash: 10Forgone benefits: 20Award points: 25000Source points: 20000

$60 award cash; $390 cash difference; $370 adjusted difference; 1.4800 adjusted cents per award point and 1.8500 per source point.

FAQ

Subtract all award cash charges and additional award-only cash costs from the matched cash price, then multiply the USD difference by 100 and divide by the award program points. The adjusted value also subtracts your estimate of benefits earned only on the cash alternative. The estimate is not a cash payment.

Use the complete bookable price for the same travelers, dates, itinerary or room, inclusions and cancellation terms. Choose a realistic alternative you would buy; an expensive quote you would never purchase can inflate the ratio. Document differences separately.

Add award-only transfer or purchase fees excluded from the award cash charge. Enter any estimated benefits available only with the cash alternative separately, or zero to exclude them. Do not double-count costs, add an annual card fee arbitrarily, or treat a refundable hold as an expense.

Enter the source points debited and award-program points used. The same adjusted USD difference is divided separately by each point count. Use this mode only when the source debit funds the entire award, with no mixed existing balance or unused transferred points. Check actual ratios, increments, fees and transfer terms separately; this is not a transfer availability or booking service.

Yes. A zero adjusted difference means no adjusted advantage in the entered amounts. A negative difference means award cash plus estimated forgone benefits exceed the cash alternative. There is no universal good-value threshold, and a positive ratio does not establish profit or affordability.

Save rewards comparison explicitly stores the completed inputs and result in browser history. Changes are not automatically saved. Restore the matching mode from its history or use Copy Markdown Report for the full inputs and details. Keep dated quotes separately; saved records do not contain bookings or live account data.

No. Review annual incremental fees, interest, earning costs and usable benefits separately. After choosing an award, use Trip Budget for actual remaining cash needs and the expense ledger for actual USD purchases and received refunds. Do not enter the forgone cash fare or points valuation as cash spending.
