How it works

Round up text pages

Divide the word count by your entered words per page and round up. A nonempty fragment needs a whole page. The density is your layout assumption, not a submission standard.

Add pages counted separately

Add title matter, blank pages or other pages not included in the text estimate. A blank additional-page field means zero.

Count physical paper

Divide the total document pages by one or two printed sides per sheet and round up. An odd total printed two-sided leaves one unused side on the final sheet.

1,001 words at 250 words per page gives 5 text pages. Add 2 separate pages for 7 total pages, requiring 4 sheets when printed two-sided.

One word at 250 words per page still occupies one estimated text page.

Zero text words with 2 additional pages gives 2 document pages and 1 sheet when printed two-sided.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Rounding a page fragment down to zero

The text-page count rounds up to hold the entered words.

Counting the same front matter twice

Include additional pages only when they are outside the text-page estimate.

No. Inspect the actual formatted file and check which pages the recipient counts. A density estimate does not reproduce line breaks, headings or illustration placement.

No. Line spacing changes the text density on a page. Two-sided printing uses the front and back of a sheet.
