How it works

Relate wavelength, frequency and speed

For a frequency f in hertz and sound speed c in metres per second, wavelength in metres is c/f. Multiply by 100 for centimetres. Frequency counts cycles per second, so one cycle takes 1/f seconds, or 1000/f milliseconds. The calculation treats the supplied frequency as one component of a sound.

State the sound-speed assumption

The default 343 m/s is illustrative. Sound speed varies with the medium and its conditions; enter a value appropriate to your analysis. This tool does not measure temperature, humidity or sound speed. Changing speed changes wavelength but leaves the cycle period unchanged at a fixed frequency.

Keep a frequency component separate from bird identification

Bird vocalizations can contain sequences of notes, changes in pitch, trills and harmonics. Cornell’s spectrogram examples show these features over time. A single entered frequency does not capture them. This calculator supplies no frequency-to-species categories, spectrogram or identification model.

Compare 4 kHz and 8 kHz under the same sound speed. Doubling frequency halves wavelength and cycle period.

Change the assumed propagation speed and inspect its effect on wavelength without treating the result as a species prediction.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Confusing kilohertz with hertz

Select the correct unit: 4 kHz equals 4000 Hz. A wrong selector changes the result by a factor of 1000.

Calling cycle period a song duration

Period describes one oscillation. It does not tell you how long a note, call or recording lasts.

Using wavelength to identify a species

No species or family classification is made. Keep the recording, location, timing and other identification evidence separately.
