How it works

A measured interval, not a species model

Divide ground-track distance by elapsed time. Ground speed is relative to the ground, while airspeed is relative to the moving air. This calculator does not use wingspan, flight-mode categories, wind vectors or a biological speed database.

Deterministic measurement bounds

For distance d ± Δd and time t ± Δt, the minimum speed is max(0, d − Δd)/(t + Δt) and the maximum is (d + Δd)/(t − Δt). Time uncertainty must remain below elapsed time so the denominator stays positive. These are worst-case bounds from the supplied limits, not a confidence interval.

Units and precision

Distance is converted to metres before division by seconds. One international foot is exactly 0.3048 m and one international mile is exactly 1609.344 m. Calculations retain floating-point precision; displayed digits do not establish measurement accuracy.
