How it works

Base Range Formula

Range equals usable energy multiplied by vehicle efficiency (miles per kWh).

Range (mi) = Usable kWh × mi/kWh

Usable Battery Capacity

Manufacturers reserve 5–10% of gross battery capacity as a buffer. State of charge further limits available energy.

Usable kWh = Capacity × Usable% × SOC%

Weather and Driving Adjustments

Cold weather (battery heating, cabin heat) can reduce range 20–30%. Highway speeds above 70 mph and A/C use also lower efficiency.

Adjusted Range = Base Range × Weather Factor × Driving Factor

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using gross battery capacity instead of usable energy

EPA range ratings account for usable capacity. A "75 kWh" pack may only have ~67–72 kWh usable.

Expecting EPA range in winter or at 75 mph

EPA tests combine city/highway cycles at moderate temperatures. Real-world highway winter range is often 20–40% lower.
