Tell the provider what you want to develop, such as navigation, buoyancy or experience in a particular environment. Record the agency and exact current course title, then distinguish an introductory experience course from a full specialty or a recognition rating. Ask how the proposed program fits your existing certification and goals. Do not choose solely by the word advanced; names and pathways can change.
Show the provider your certification and recent dive record, and ask which current entry requirements apply. Confirm any age restrictions, required forms and medical screening through the provider’s process. Discuss gaps in recent practice, comfort or equipment familiarity and arrange a refresher when appropriate. Record the agreed preparation tasks and who will confirm them before the water sessions.
Review the required and optional training dives with the instructor. Choose available options that fit your objectives, experience, equipment and local conditions. Obtain an itemized offer covering learning materials, instruction, water sessions, equipment, transport and certification processing. Confirm what happens if weather changes, a selected experience is unavailable or more practice is needed. A digital learning purchase alone may not include the complete course.
Complete the provider’s assigned study and keep a list of questions for the briefing. Arrange fitting and familiarization for any new or rented equipment. Confirm the session locations and what you need to bring. Ask how the instructor will introduce unfamiliar activities and what remains outside the course scope; selecting an experience does not replace the prerequisites or full training needed for specialist diving.
Follow the instructor’s briefings, demonstrations and performance requirements during each session. Communicate uncertainty or discomfort and pause when a task needs more explanation or practice. Afterward, record the topic, instructor feedback, completed requirements and any remaining work. Do not treat attendance, a scheduled final day or a checked box here as confirmation that all course requirements have been met.
Ask the provider to confirm completion and how the certification will appear in your record. Retain the exact program name, date, completed topics and any restrictions or outstanding requirements. Clarify whether individual dives can count toward future specialty training and what additional work is required. Save this checklist separately from the provider’s completion records. Plan further practice around the instructor’s feedback; an introductory specialty dive does not by itself complete that specialty certification.
