Workflow

  1. Plan Circuits and Panel Layout

    2-4 hours

    Design circuit layout on floor plan, assign dedicated circuits for kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and HVAC, and plan panel location with adequate working clearance.

  2. Install Electrical Boxes

    4-8 hours

    Mount boxes at correct heights (outlets 300 mm / 12" above floor, switches 1,070 mm / 42"), secure to studs, and ensure box volume meets fill requirements.

  3. Run Wires and Cables

    1-2 days

    Drill stud bays, pull NM-B (Romex) or conduit, maintain 32 mm (1-1/4") setback from stud face, install nail plates where wires pass through, and label circuits at panel.

Voltage Drop LimitsStandard

NEC recommends maximum 3% voltage drop on branch circuits and 5% total (feeder + branch). At 120V, 3% = 3.6V drop. Excessive drop causes dim lights, motor overheating, and nuisance breaker trips.

GFCI and AFCI RequirementsSafety

GFCI required: bathrooms, kitchens (counter outlets), garages, outdoors, crawl spaces, unfinished basements, laundry, within 1.8 m (6 ft) of water. AFCI required: most habitable room outlets in new construction (bedrooms, living areas, hallways).

  • Label Everything at the Panel

    Create a clear panel directory before pulling wire — label both ends of each cable with circuit number and destination. Future troubleshooting and remodels depend on accurate labeling.

  • Leave Service Loops in Boxes

    Leave 150 mm (6") of extra wire in each box for device connection and future changes. Pulling wire tight makes connections difficult and violates minimum length requirements.

  • Separate Low and High Voltage

    Keep data, coax, and low-voltage cables at least 300 mm (12") from parallel electrical runs. Cross low-voltage wires perpendicular to line voltage to minimize interference.

  • Plan for Future Capacity

    Install a panel with 20–30% spare breaker spaces. Running a conduit stub to the attic or basement during rough-in costs little now and saves major work for future circuits.

Safety Notes

  • Always de-energize circuits at the panel and verify with a non-contact voltage tester before working — assume all wires are live until proven dead.
  • Electrical work beyond minor repairs typically requires a licensed electrician and permit — check local jurisdiction requirements.
  • Never work on panels or service entrance conductors without proper PPE rated for the available fault current.
  • Arc flash and electrocution are fatal hazards — if you are not qualified, hire a licensed electrician.
