Workflow

  1. Define the studio’s actual use

    List speakers, remote guests, recording software, available space and intended delivery format. Identify the biggest current limitation with a sample recording: room reflections, background noise, clipping, routing or editing effort. Record the available budget and reuse working equipment before choosing an upgrade.

  2. Compare room positions under normal conditions

    Record the same passage at practical room and microphone positions with normal ventilation and devices running. Listen at matched level for reflections and changing low-frequency coloration. Use a decay measurement only with its band, fit and noise-floor context; a guessed absorption area or one RT60 number cannot grade a small room.

  3. Choose a repeatable mic position

    Compare candidate distances with the same microphone, pattern, gain and source passage. Check plosives, movement tolerance and unwanted room pickup. If measuring band response, normalize the low band to the same reference band in both captures and keep the files alongside the comparison.

  4. Verify gain, monitoring and noise

    Record normal and emphatic speech while monitoring the intended path on headphones. Check actual file peaks and compatible signal/noise measurements where needed. A quiet room-tone reading depends on gain and meter convention; do not equate a gated floor or a single dBFS value with an absolute room-quality rating.

  5. Record and edit a representative segment

    Produce a segment with the expected speakers, playback or call audio and pauses. Stop, reopen and listen to every recorded track. Export a delivery test using the actual required channel format and estimate storage for takes and backups, then confirm the written files and available space.

  6. Save the working studio procedure

    Record device names, connections, mic position, room state, gain and the tested software configuration. Keep the sample and any comparison recordings for future changes. Download the setup and recovery note so another session can reproduce the working chain without relying on memory.
