K–12 School Choice: Enrollment, Support and Daily Costs

Compare learning needs, actual enrollment routes, visits, care coverage and complete household costs before confirming a school.

Workflow

  1. Define the child’s learning and daily-life needs

Use your actual records and review schedule

Discuss the child’s interests, current learning, wellbeing, language and access needs. Identify necessary services, travel constraints, schedule and household priorities. Decide what evidence would help compare settings, including how the school responds when a learner needs additional support.

  2. Verify real enrollment options

Use your actual records and review schedule

Read the district, school or program’s current boundaries, admissions, lottery, transfer, tuition and home-education rules. Check entry ages and cutoff dates directly. Record required evidence and the actual application and response deadlines. Ask how disability-related evaluation and services work in each setting.

  3. Visit and compare evidence

Use your actual records and review schedule

Use the same questions during visits: instruction, communication, attendance, behavior support, accessibility, student work and response to concerns. Ask to see how policies operate in practice and retain the source of claims. Where visits are unavailable, arrange another way to review the relevant evidence.

  4. Check transport and care coverage

Use your actual records and review schedule

Map the actual school day, travel and handoff windows. Include before-school and after-school care, early releases, holidays and closures. Confirm availability and responsibilities before counting a window as covered. Make separate cases when children’s requirements differ.

  5. Compare complete household costs

Use your actual records and review schedule

Obtain actual tuition, fees, uniforms, supplies, meals, transport, activities and care costs. Verify assistance, billing dates, deposits and cancellation terms. Compare the complete household effect, including any work-schedule change, rather than deciding affordability from a fixed percentage of income.

  6. Confirm the choice and review the transition

Use your actual records and review schedule

Review the evidence with the child and confirm acceptance, enrollment documents, care arrangements and any support plan. Coordinate records transfer through the approved process. After the transition, check attendance, access, communication and wellbeing, and assign follow-up actions for unresolved concerns.

Reference Materials

Check the route’s governing rulesStandard

The Department of Education’s choice resources describe education routes and link to state private and home-school regulation; local enrollment rules remain essential.

Understand public-school disability servicesStandard

Section 504 FAPE can involve regular or special education and related aids and services; it is not limited to a list of classroom accommodations.

  • Use the same questions

A consistent question list makes different visits easier to compare.

  • Review with the learner

Invite the child’s views in an accessible way and revisit concerns after the transition.

Safety Notes

  • Enrollment, school services, educational rights and fees depend on the actual jurisdiction and setting.
