Local Food Shopping and Use Plan

Find current local food sources, compare usable quantities and full shopping costs, plan storage and meals, and review actual food use before committing.

Workflow

  1. Start with meals and food already available

Check the refrigerator, freezer and pantry, then list meals likely to be eaten at home during the chosen period. Record useful quantities and storage space. Identify a small set of foods for a local-source trial instead of buying a large seasonal box without a use plan.

  2. Find sources and verify current terms

Use the USDA market directory or current local sources to find candidate markets, farms, cooperatives or CSA programs. Confirm operating dates, access, payment methods, product availability and pickup arrangements directly. For a subscription, record share variability, missed-pickup rules and cancellation terms.

  3. Compare complete prices for usable quantities

Record product type and quality, usable quantity and the same tax, delivery or fee scope. Compare prices on a matching mass, volume or count unit. Keep travel and subscription commitments visible separately and consider the amount you can use before it spoils.

  4. Shop, transport and store for the actual food

Follow appropriate food-specific handling and storage guidance, including temperature control for perishables. Label stored food and assign it to the planned meals. Use only known edible parts and a tested, food-specific preservation method for surplus; do not improvise a canning or dehydration process.

  5. Review what was eaten before the next order

Record actual quantities used, waste reasons, out-of-pocket expense and pickup effort. Adjust the next order or meal plan from those observations. If a CSA or bulk purchase is proposed, compare the commitment with demonstrated household use and the available storage and preparation time.

Reference Materials

Find and confirm current market informationStandard

USDA AMS provides market listings with location, operating and product information. Check current details and any subscription terms with the operator.

Plan quantities and store appropriatelyStandard

EPA’s home food-waste guidance emphasizes checking existing food, planning realistic quantities and using appropriate storage. Only use food parts that are known to be edible and safe.

Keep the comparison boundedFormula

A price result compares entered costs per matching food quantity. It does not verify a farm’s practices, nutritional equivalence or a complete lifecycle emissions claim.

  • Record the reason for surplus

An oversized order and a missed meal need different adjustments.

  • Test a smaller commitment

A short trial can show whether pickup times and preparation effort fit the household.
