Workflow

  1. Define a skill and the evidence needed

Start from actual role requirements or feedback. Choose a skill you need to demonstrate and record the current evidence, gap and context. Clarify what competent performance would look like with a manager, practitioner or relevant credential body.

  2. Compare relevant learning routes and total cost

Compare practice projects, mentoring, courses or credentials against the chosen gap. Verify content, prerequisites, recognition, assessment, access and refund terms. Record fees, materials, travel and time; confirm any employer reimbursement and repayment conditions before committing.

  3. Schedule a realistic learning deliverable

Define a work sample, assessment or applied task with milestones and a review date. Allocate learning within a real week, including practice and feedback. Agree resources and workplace use where needed, and reduce scope if the plan conflicts with existing responsibilities.

  4. Apply the skill and collect feedback

Complete a bounded task in an appropriate setting. Keep the method, result, mistakes and feedback, and compare them with the original success criteria. Respect permission and confidentiality requirements for work samples. Revise the practice plan based on evidence rather than course completion alone.

  5. Update the evidence and decide the next step

Review the demonstrated skill against the original need. Update your resume only with accurate learning status and work you can explain. Decide whether further practice, another learning route or a role discussion is appropriate, and record a next action and review date.

Reference Materials

Research role requirementsStandard

Use BLS occupation profiles to understand work and typical entry requirements, then confirm the needs of your actual target role.

Present education accuratelyStandard

CareerOneStop’s resume guidance discusses relevant education and professional development. Distinguish completed and in-progress learning.

Development evidence methodStandard

Use requirement, current example, gap, learning route, cost, practice hours, deliverable, feedback and review date as a working record. The plan does not convert training into a guaranteed salary gain.

  • Keep the decision record

Retain the sources, date, open questions and next action with this plan. Update the record when the employer, schedule or assumptions change.

  • Save work you want to revisit

Resume and application workspaces save only when you choose Save in this browser. Download their JSON backups for recovery. The notepad saves one text document locally; download separate notes before replacing it.

Safety Notes

  • Verify credential recognition and funding or repayment terms before enrolling.
  • Share only work samples you are authorized to disclose.
