Social Media Privacy and Account Cleanup

Review account access, archive content you need, check actual post audiences, and verify deletion or privacy changes.

Workflow

  1. List accounts and the intended outcome

Record service names and whether each account should remain active, become more private or be closed. Include pages or groups you administer and any login, business or payment dependencies.

  2. Review account access and recovery

Use official account settings to review sessions, connected apps, recovery methods and MFA or passkeys. Investigate unfamiliar activity using the provider’s security process.

  3. Export and verify content to retain

Request available archives and confirm their scope. Store the export outside any account you plan to delete. Open representative media and records before removing content or closing an account.

  4. Review posts, profile and sharing settings

Inspect the audience on representative old and new posts, profile fields, tags and shared links. Change or remove selected content according to the platform’s actual controls, then check from the intended viewer perspective.

  5. Confirm changes and retain a review date

Verify deactivation or deletion status and any documented recovery window. Recheck connected apps and subscriptions, and record unresolved requests. Use the platform’s reporting route for impersonation or abusive content.

Protect account accessTip

Review strong sign-in and recovery controls alongside audience settings; these address different ways information can be exposed.

Check archive coverageTip

Google’s export documentation explains that downloading data does not delete it and that the archive has scope and timing limits. Check the equivalent documentation for each social provider.
