Streaming Audio Routing and Rehearsal

Route microphone, program and guest audio deliberately, verify monitoring and recording tracks, and rehearse the full listener path.

Workflow

  1. Draw the audio destination map

List microphone, game or application, guest call, music and alerts. For each source, identify whether it goes to the live program, local recording, isolated edit track or headphones. Record the actual application and device paths so duplicate captures and feedback loops can be found.

  2. Check each source at the input

Set source-level controls and confirm the intended recording device before balancing the program. Speak at normal and loud levels, then play representative program material. Measure recorded peaks with an identified scale; headroom in dBFS is unrelated to acoustic SPL or the volume delivered by headphones.

  3. Configure monitoring and return audio

Choose one intentional monitoring path and use headphones to prevent acoustic feedback where appropriate. Give a remote guest a return that excludes their own delayed voice when the system supports it. Test this behavior with an actual call and avoid capturing the monitoring output again as desktop audio.

  4. Record the intended track layout

Enable the actual output tracks and route sources in the broadcasting app. Keep a complete program track for ordinary playback and isolated tracks only when needed for editing. Make a local recording and solo each intended track in an editor; a standard player may expose only one track.

  5. Rehearse the complete program

Record speech with program audio, alerts, guest talk, overlaps and a scene change. Listen at matched playback level for missing syllables, clipping, echo, voice masking and sync. If adding compression, inspect its steady curve, then verify actual attack and release with quiet and loud speech.

  6. Save settings and verify a listener test

Check a deliberate platform test or intended broadcast from a separate receiving device at controlled volume. Confirm the live program, replay audio where relevant, mute states and recovery from a disconnected source. Save the routing map, tested settings and a recording of the rehearsal.

Reference Materials

OBS audio mixerStandard

OBS documents source-level controls and monitoring. Verify the entire signal path with actual recordings and listening.

OBS multiple audio tracksStandard

OBS distinguishes a complete program track from isolated tracks and notes that ordinary players generally play one audio track at a time.

  • Check the exported recording

A correct live mix can coexist with missing local recording tracks.

  • Use representative quiet speech

A gate that passes loud test words may still remove natural sentence endings.
