Sump Pump Planning: Inflow, Curves and Commissioning

Workflow

  1. Record the sump application and inflow evidence

    Confirm whether the application is groundwater or clear-water drainage and document permitted discharge and installation requirements. Record basin geometry, observed high-water history and the measurement method. Estimate inflow from a safely observed pump-off level rise only when basin cross-section and displaced volume are understood.

  2. Build the actual discharge head model

    Record source/discharge reference elevations, actual pipe inside diameter, straight length and fittings. Include check-valve and local losses using the applicable data and the same velocity basis. Treat static lift, required residual pressure and friction as separate terms.

  3. Compare permitted pump-curve operating points

    Enter documented points for each exact pump, speed and impeller within its permitted range. Locate the intersection with system head and compare delivery with the reviewed inflow case. Check intended liquid, minimum submergence, switch travel, cycling limits and service access in the actual manual.

  4. Coordinate installation and backup behavior

    Have the pipe route, basin, support, valve orientation, vent/anti-airlock details and electrical supply installed to the actual equipment and local requirements. Keep the float path free and establish high-water alarm and backup behavior appropriate to the site. For a battery backup, use its real load profile and usable energy.

  5. Commission inflow, switching and discharge

    Follow the manufacturer’s controlled water-test procedure. Confirm start/stop levels, unobstructed float motion, discharge delivery, leaks, valve behavior and alarm operation. Test the approved backup or failure response without allowing overflow. Record actual delivered volume and timing where a reliable measurement is possible.

  6. Retain the system and maintenance record

    Export the selected pump curve, pipe dimensions, observed inflow cases, commissioning results and exact manuals. Keep inspection and test intervals from the actual manufacturer and site plan. Recheck the hydraulic case after a pipe change, altered discharge destination or new high-water evidence.

    A dry-weather test may not represent seasonal groundwater or a storm event.
