Used Car Evidence and Purchase Checklist

Compare sourced prices, verify title and recall information, arrange an independent inspection and reconcile the final purchase and financing.

Workflow

  1. Set a budget with a repair allowance

Choose a vehicle budget that includes insurance, running costs and known upcoming work. Separate available cash, net trade equity and taxes or fees. Keep flexibility for inspection findings instead of applying a fixed repair allowance to every used vehicle.

  2. Gather vehicle identity and value evidence

Match the VIN, trim, mileage and condition to current comparable offers. Check seller identity, title and lien information with the relevant authority; obtain available history and recall records. Save the source date and distinguish asking prices from sale or trade offers.

  3. Arrange an independent inspection

Have an appropriate independent mechanic inspect the vehicle and provide findings and repair estimates. Review test-drive observations, service records and any dealer warranty disclosures. Resolve material uncertainty before making the purchase decision.

  4. Complete transfer and start the service record

Confirm local payment, title, lien-release, registration and insurance procedures before exchange. Retain the signed records and any promised work. Record the starting odometer and verified maintenance history, and follow up on unresolved recalls or service needs.

Reference Materials

Inspection and history are complementaryStandard

The FTC distinguishes a history report from a mechanical inspection and recommends preserving written findings and purchase promises.

Price and credit are separateStandard

Keep the vehicle price and the complete financing offer visible rather than comparing only payments.

Use authoritative recall informationStandard

Check the identified vehicle and follow the campaign-specific instructions; a clean history report is not a recall clearance.

  • Record the quote type

Retail asking price, trade allowance and sale proceeds are different values.

  • Respond to missing evidence

Resolve inspection or title gaps before proceeding with the transaction.

Safety Notes

  • Use safe meeting and payment arrangements appropriate to the transaction.
  • Do not rely on an online value estimate to establish mechanical condition or legal ownership.
