How it works

Roofing Squares

One roofing square equals 100 sq ft of roof surface. Shingles are sold by the square or bundle (typically 3 bundles per square for 3-tab).

Squares = Roof Area (sq ft) ÷ 100

Bundle Count

Architectural shingles often use 3–4 bundles per square. Apply 10–15% waste for cuts, ridges, and errors.

Bundles = ceil(Squares × Bundles per Square × (1 + Waste%))

Starter and Ridge Cap

Order separate starter strips for eaves and ridge cap shingles for hips and ridges — not included in field shingle bundle count.

Example Scenarios

18 squares × 3 bundles = 54 bundles field shingles. Add ridge cap (≈35 LF ridge) and starter for eaves separately.

6 squares needs 18–24 bundles depending on shingle weight class. Small roof — buy extra bundle for color lot matching.

300 sq ft repair zone needs 9 bundles minimum. Match existing shingle model and lot if possible for color blend.

FAQ

Standard 3-tab: 3 bundles per square. Heavier architectural/laminated shingles: often 4 bundles per square. Check manufacturer packaging for your specific product line.

Simple gable roof: 10% waste. Complex roof with many valleys, dormers, and hips: 12–15%. Steeper pitches increase cut waste at rakes.

Yes. Order synthetic underlayment or felt by roof square (same area as shingles). Ice and water shield at eaves in cold climates is additional linear feet.

Use footprint area × pitch factor from a roof pitch calculator, or measure each plane. Do not use floor plan area alone on pitched roofs.

Many codes allow one overlay maximum. Overlay adds weight and hides deck damage — calculator quantity is the same whether tear-off or overlay.
