Sod Calculator

Calculate exact sod-piece demand, explicit layout allowance, matching stock, supplier sale units and delivered surplus without a fixed pallet size.

Use this result well

Inputs that matter
Measured net turf area, explicit layout allowance, one exact selected sod piece coverage, usable compatible fresh pieces, and exact pieces per current supplier sale unit
Output to expect
Net, allowance and order area; required whole pieces; stock applied; new demand; supplier sale units; available pieces and visible surplus coverage
How it works
Apply only the entered area allowance, round exact selected-piece coverage to whole pieces, subtract compatible fresh stock, then round only new demand to the supplier's exact sale unit
  • Verify the exact variety, producer, cut, installed piece coverage, condition, freshness, current packaging, minimums, partial-unit policy, availability and returns; no universal roll or pallet is assumed.
  • Review soil testing and amendments, grading, drainage, species/site suitability, irrigation, delivery access and timing, handling, installation, establishment care, labor, price and tax separately; this quantity record approves none of them.

Choose your path

Built around the job you need to finish

Convert measured net turf area into an auditable order for one exact sod piece and supplier sale unit without a fixed roll or pallet assumption.

Homeowner ordering one sod product

Keep measured lawn area and layout allowance visible.

Measure net turf shapes, select the exact sod product, and enter only the allowance justified for the layout.

Sees net, allowance and order area plus whole-piece demand without hidden waste.

Landscape buyer reconciling supplier units

Translate exact producer pieces into the actual current sale unit.

Copy coverage per piece and pieces per pallet, bundle or individual sale, then count only compatible fresh stock.

Gets stock allocation, new pieces, sale units, delivered pieces and surplus without a universal pallet.

Installer coordinating establishment

Keep a material count from being mistaken for site or installation approval.

Review soil, grading, drainage, turf suitability, irrigation, delivery timing, handling and care through responsible sources.

The result explicitly excludes establishment design, scheduling, price and Project approval.

How it works

Measured area and explicit allowance

Subtract measured non-turf areas first. The allowance is entered visibly; zero adds none.

Order area = Measured net turf area × (1 + Entered allowance%)

Exact selected sod pieces

Use the producer's exact slab, roll or other piece coverage. Formats and coverage vary by producer and region.

Required pieces = ceil(Order area ÷ Exact installed coverage per piece)

Stock and supplier sale units

Apply only compatible fresh pieces, then round remaining demand to the exact current supplier unit. Enter 1 when pieces are sold individually.

Sale units = ceil((Required pieces − Usable matching pieces) ÷ Exact pieces per sale unit)

Example Scenarios

Copy both coverage per piece and pieces per current pallet. The result shows required pieces, whole sale units and surplus separately.

If the supplier sells compatible pieces individually, enter 1 piece per sale unit instead of assuming a pallet.

Keep each variety, producer, cut, condition or installation window in its own record rather than pooling incompatible stock.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Assuming every pallet contains 50 rolls

Enter exact coverage per selected piece and exact pieces per current supplier sale unit independently.

Treating quantity as lawn-establishment approval

Review turf suitability, soil, grading, drainage, irrigation, delivery, handling and establishment separately.

FAQ

Piece formats, piece coverage and pieces per pallet vary by producer, grass, region and harvest method. Copy the exact current supplier data.

Use one consistent counted unit from the exact supplier: a slab, small roll or another documented piece. Large rolls may need a separate coverage-based record.

Only when whole pieces remain fresh and compatible in variety, producer, cut, condition and installation window. The tool caps applied stock at required demand.

No. Site conditions, soil testing, grading, amendments, drainage, species suitability and establishment irrigation require separate responsible review.

No. Confirm freshness, availability, minimums, partial-unit policy, delivery access and timing, handling, returns and installation sequence with the producer and installer.
