How it works

Percentage relative to water

When p means salt divided by water times 100, multiply water mass by p/100. At 5%, 1,000 g water requires 50 g salt.

Salt = water × p ÷ 100

Percentage of the final salt-and-water mass

When p means salt divided by salt plus water times 100, the salt itself belongs in the denominator. At 5%, 1,000 g water requires about 52.631579 g salt.

Salt = water × p ÷ (100 − p)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Treating every “5% brine” as the same ratio

Keep the denominator with the percentage. With 1,000 g water, 5% relative to water requires 50 g salt; 5% of salt + water requires about 52.631579 g.

Reading combined mass as solution volume

The total is salt mass plus water mass in grams. Dissolving salt does not make that sum a volume in liters; this calculator does not model density.

With a positive water mass, salt cannot be the entire combined mass. The target formula would divide by zero at 100%; values above 100% are also invalid.

The calculation balances masses and does not model solubility, temperature, other ingredients or salt purity. A mathematically valid ratio does not guarantee a fully dissolved brine.
