Use this result well

Inputs that matter
One artwork revision, source/report identity, process and substrate specification, exact sheet dimensions, one or two printed sides, whole good and explicit spoilage impressions, source-reported area-weighted average C/M/Y/K coverage per side, optional source-reported pointwise TAC context, and—only for mass mode—four retained g/m²-at-100% channel rates plus an optional same-job independent mass
Output to expect
Exact sheet and printed-surface area, planned impressions, C/M/Y/K channel-area equivalents, average summed channel coverage and optional per-channel/total mass with one signed same-job comparison
How it works
Normalize sheet dimensions with the exact inch/SI relation; add only explicit spoilage impressions; calculate each channel as sheet area × planned impressions × its side-specific average coverage, and multiply by a retained full-tone rate only when source-rate mass mode is complete
  • Average channel coverage is distinct from peak or pointwise Total Area Coverage. Optional TAC remains source context only; the Tool does not inspect artwork/RIP output or choose a provider/press/substrate limit.
  • No rate, ink density, grams-to-millilitres conversion, cartridge yield, startup/cleaning waste, cost, press setting, drying plan, proof, quality acceptance, production release or compliance approval is inferred.

Choose your path

Built around the job you need to finish

Create one source-owned CMYK channel-area record from side-specific average coverage and explicit impressions, optionally estimate mass from four retained full-tone rates and reconcile one same-job independent mass, while refusing artwork inspection, universal TAC limits, yield/cost conversion, process decisions and production approval.

Prepress coordinator transcribing a separations report

Turn revision-specific front/back CMYK averages into reproducible channel-area arithmetic without confusing those averages with peak TAC.

Retain the artwork/report revision, process, substrate, sheet and explicit good/spoilage counts, enter each side/channel value, optionally retain pointwise TAC context and create the record.

Can reproduce quantity and channel area while artwork inspection, the applicable TAC limit, separation changes and preflight acceptance remain external.

Print-production estimator using a supplier rate record

Estimate per-channel and total ink mass without accepting a generic offset/digital film weight, density or waste percentage.

Switch to source-rate mass mode, enter four job/process-owned g/m²-at-100% rates and their source, then reconcile a complete independent same-job estimate.

Gets transparent mass arithmetic and a signed comparison while inventory, price, makeready, press settings, drying, proof and release remain separately owned.

Graphic-production instructor separating coverage concepts

Demonstrate why average plate coverage, pointwise TAC, standardized office-cartridge yield and production ink mass are distinct evidence families.

Load the de-identified two-sided example, switch to channel-area-only mode, exercise one-sided clearing, partial TAC/rate/comparison errors and inspect every refusal boundary.

Learners can explain what the arithmetic proves without treating ISO test pages, cartridge ratings or one TAC number as universal production rules.

How it works

Source identity and channel-area arithmetic

Freeze the artwork revision, report, process, substrate, sheet, printed sides and quantity. Each channel-area equivalent uses its source-reported side average; good and explicit spoilage impressions are added as whole counts.

channel area = sheet area × planned impressions × (front average + back average) ÷ 100

Average coverage is not pointwise TAC

Adobe defines Total Area Coverage at a point as the sum of inks there and tells users to obtain the applicable limit from the print provider. This record keeps average channel coverage and optional pointwise TAC explicitly separate.

average summed coverage = summed channel area ÷ physical printed surface area × 100

Optional source-rate mass estimate

Mass mode multiplies each channel area by a retained g/m²-at-100% rate for the matching process and conditions. No rate, density, volume, cartridge yield, makeready loss, price or cost is inferred.

channel mass = channel area × retained full-tone application rate

Example Scenarios

A coordinator records front/back CMYK averages for one final artwork revision, confirms the sheet and explicit run quantity, and exports a channel-area record without claiming to have inspected the PDF.

An estimator adds four documented full-tone rates for the same process and substrate, calculates per-channel mass and retains a signed difference from one independent same-job estimate.

An instructor compares the average summed channel result with a separately sourced pointwise TAC value and ISO office-yield scope, showing why none can silently replace another.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Entering one combined percentage as both average coverage and pointwise TAC

Retain front/back C, M, Y and K area-weighted averages separately. Keep any pointwise TAC value and its source in the optional context pair without using it as an average or universal limit.

Using a generic film weight, 1 g/mL density, ISO yield ratio or waste percentage

Use channel-area-only mode unless all four full-tone rates have a matching retained source. Enter spoilage as an explicit whole count and leave volume, yield, price, cost and press losses to accountable evidence.

FAQ

No. It does not open or inspect a PDF, artwork file or RIP. Transcribe area-weighted channel averages from a retained report and identify that report, method and artwork revision.

No. The displayed average is channel area divided by total printed surface area. Pointwise TAC sums inks at a location. Keep a TAC value only with its same-revision source and obtain the applicable limit from the provider.

Not here. ISO/IEC 24712 supplies office-consumable test pages, while ISO/IEC 19798 and 24711 have defined device, cartridge and plain-paper scopes. They do not establish this job's mass, quality or direct cost per page.

Only from a retained provider, supplier, measurement or same-process planning record that matches the job's process and conditions. The Tool has no generic offset, inkjet, toner or digital default.

Only the signed arithmetic difference after a reviewer confirms matching artwork, process, substrate, sheet, sides, planned impressions, spoilage and rate basis. It does not prove tolerance, inventory, cost, proof or production acceptance.

About Ink Coverage Source Record

Create one revision-controlled coverage record from an artwork, separations, RIP or provider report. Enter area-weighted C, M, Y and K averages per printed side and explicit good/spoilage impressions. Optional mass arithmetic requires four retained full-tone application rates; pointwise TAC remains separate context, not a universal limit or approval.
