Prepare for a first ski tour with an instructor, suitable terrain, equipment practice and a return plan. Includes a downloadable checklist and sources.
Arrange instruction and choose a venue with the instructor. A resort uphill route is an option only when its operator permits access and its current uphill policy is followed. Record the meeting point, access hours and required equipment.
For a backcountry session, read the current local avalanche bulletin and mountain weather. Discuss the ascent, descent and terrain above both with the instructor. Convert published elevation figures only when the group uses different units.
On a suitable practice area, learn to attach skins and switch the exact boots and bindings between uphill and downhill modes. Use the manufacturer instructions and instructor feedback; resolve fit or function problems before the tour.
Confirm group communication, the planned return route and the conditions that would end the session. Make the first outing long enough to practise, with room to return before fatigue or conditions overwhelm the group.

A regional forecast informs route choices; it does not approve an individual slope. Low-angle ground can still be exposed to avalanches from connected terrain above it.
Backcountry travel requires practiced companion-rescue skills and suitable rescue equipment. Use an avalanche course to learn and rehearse them.
