Workflow

  1. Define the roles and constraints to investigate

List the work you want to do and constraints around location, care, hours, access and income. Compare actual role descriptions with BLS occupation profiles. Record required skills, credentials and experience, separating requirements from employer preferences. Select a manageable set of questions to test.

  2. Test transferable skills with a small work sample

Map each target requirement to work you can demonstrate. Draft a tailored resume and identify gaps honestly. Test a task, short course or permitted project before committing to a costly program. Ask practitioners about the work and record what changed in your understanding.

  3. Build a monthly cash plan and chosen reserve

List recurring household outflows, training costs, reduced hours and confirmed income. Use the budget tool for the monthly plan and the reserve tool for a coverage period you choose. Count accessible funds separately from retirement accounts or property; list one-time costs without double counting.

  4. Schedule learning and search within a real week

Record work, commute, care, rest, learning and other activities once each in the weekly time budget. Save an observed week and a proposed week. Choose a next learning deliverable and a date to review evidence and cash assumptions; revise the scope if the hours overlap.

  5. Track real applications and the transition decision

Create records for verified openings, connect the correct resume version and set next actions. Review employer feedback, actual offers and the remaining cash plan. Confirm insurance continuity, benefit dates and any contract notice obligations before changing work arrangements.

Reference Materials

Understand the target occupationStandard

The Occupational Outlook Handbook describes work, entry requirements, pay and projected outlook. Check the specific profile and publication date.

Use experience as evidenceStandard

Resume experience can include relevant paid and unpaid work. Explain your role and demonstrated outcomes accurately.

Transition planning methodStandard

Keep the budget, chosen reserve and weekly time allocation as separate scenarios. Neither a positive cash balance nor a training certificate guarantees a job.

  • Keep the decision record

Retain the sources, date, open questions and next action with this plan. Update the record when the employer, schedule or assumptions change.

  • Save work you want to revisit

Resume and application workspaces save only when you choose Save in this browser. Download their JSON backups for recovery. The notepad saves one text document locally; download separate notes before replacing it.

Safety Notes

  • Confirm credential recognition, funding conditions and work authorization with the responsible organizations.
  • Keep current employer and client information confidential when preparing work samples.
