Workflow

  1. Define a service and test demand

Describe the client problem, deliverable, acceptance criteria and work excluded. Talk to potential clients and examine competing services using current evidence. Record requests and objections before investing in a broad offer or assuming a platform will supply customers.

  2. Calculate a sustainable internal rate floor

Enter owner pay before personal income tax, business overhead, an explicit taxes/benefits/leave reserve, operating margin and realistic billable capacity. Keep unpaid administration and sales time outside billable hours. Compare the floor with actual demand and delivery risk when preparing a quote.

  3. Agree the commercial and administrative terms

Record deliverables, milestones, fees, expenses, change requests, payment timing, acceptance, cancellation and ownership terms. Check business structure, registration, licensing, insurance and worker-classification requirements for the actual arrangement. Use professional review where the contract or jurisdiction needs it.

  4. Separate records, tax components and benefits

Track income and business expenses with source documents. Check current IRS and state rules, then use the Schedule SE scenario only for its listed Social Security and Medicare components and entered parameters. Review income-tax estimates and payment dates separately. Obtain actual health coverage and benefit information.

  5. Review delivery economics and workload

After delivery, compare invoiced revenue, costs and time with the quote. Use the profit tool for the entered operating statement, and update the rate floor when actual overhead or billable capacity changes. Record unpaid invoices and next client actions without counting receivables as collected cash.

Reference Materials

Research before committingStandard

SBA planning resources cover customer demand, competition, startup costs and business plans. Apply the questions to your actual service.

Check tax components and filingsStandard

The IRS self-employed center distinguishes income tax from self-employment tax and explains estimated-payment and filing resources. Use current instructions for your situation.

Set up the business for its locationStandard

Use the SBA business guide to identify structure, registration, licensing, banking and insurance questions, then verify the requirements with the responsible authority.

  • Keep the decision record

Retain the sources, date, open questions and next action with this plan. Update the record when the employer, schedule or assumptions change.

  • Save work you want to revisit

Resume and application workspaces save only when you choose Save in this browser. Download their JSON backups for recovery. The notepad saves one text document locally; download separate notes before replacing it.

Safety Notes

  • Verify worker classification and contract terms for the actual engagement.
  • Use verified invoicing and payment channels and retain the original accounting records.
