Paragliding Equipment: Complete Mass, Fit and Service

Compare documented equipment ranges, verify the complete wing–harness–reserve configuration with qualified help, and keep service records.

Workflow

  1. Define the pilot and intended use

    As required by the briefing or review

    Describe your training stage, recent relevant experience, launch environment and intended flying. Discuss suitable equipment with your instructor or qualified adviser using the manufacturer’s intended-pilot information. A certification letter by itself does not establish a match to the pilot or the day’s conditions.

  2. Weigh the complete carried configuration

    As required by the briefing or review

    List the pilot in flying clothing, wing, harness, reserve, helmet, instruments, water and every other carried item. Use one measurement basis and avoid counting an item twice. Compare the total with the actual wing’s documented operating range; retain the manual revision and the exact size.

  3. Keep area and performance comparisons consistent

    As required by the briefing or review

    If comparing wing loading, distinguish flat area from projected area and convert mass and area units consistently. Keep the wing’s configuration and loading with any documented polar data. Do not infer handling, an EN class or a new performance curve from a loading number alone.

  4. Have the complete reserve system checked

    As required by the briefing or review

    Confirm reserve size, harness/container compatibility, connections, installation and extraction with an appropriately qualified person and the equipment manuals. A reserve mass limit can only be compared after checking its mass definition. Record the actual inspection and compatibility outcome, including any work still required.

  5. Record service dates and source-owned intervals

    As required by the briefing or review

    Gather the inspection, repack and service documents for each item. Enter the actual calendar and usage intervals, last completed service and use since service. Record event-triggered checks separately; a calendar countdown does not deal with damage, contamination or a recall.

  6. Retain configuration changes and completed use

    As required by the briefing or review

    Save a dated equipment baseline and a portable copy. When changing a component or carried load, repeat the relevant mass and compatibility checks and keep both versions. Link completed-flight records to a stable wing identifier so recorded use can support subsequent service planning.

Wing class and pilot matchStandard

Use the manufacturer’s intended-pilot information and relevant experience when discussing wing class. Certification describes tested characteristics; it does not remove the need for instruction and judgment.

Reserve as a complete systemStandard

Sizing is one part of reserve selection. The harness, container, connections and extraction arrangement also need a documented compatibility and installation check.

Equipment baselineStandard

Keep model, size, serial identifiers, manuals and inspection records together before comparing configurations.

  • Weigh the configuration you carry

    Water, clothing and additional equipment can change the complete mass.

  • Track service events separately

    Record damage or unusual events even when a calendar interval has time remaining.

  • Do not use an unresolved fit, compatibility, installation or condition issue as an acceptable tradeoff for a favorable mass result.
  • Follow actual manufacturer and qualified service instructions for inspection and repacking.
