Paragliding Weather: Evidence, Wind and Local Conditions

Organize current weather evidence, inspect wind variability and terrain effects, and retain the reasons for a site-specific decision.

Workflow

  1. Collect current regional and local weather evidence

    As required by the briefing or review

    Record the issue time, valid period, location and altitude represented by each forecast or observation. Review official warnings and the expected evolution through the planned activity and return. Keep missing or conflicting information visible. These calculators use entered observations; they do not supply a live flying forecast.

  2. Describe wind direction and variability

    As required by the briefing or review

    Record steady wind, gust observations and the direction sector with their measurement periods. Resolve the wind against the site’s actual reference direction, including tailwind and wind from either side. A sector that crosses north must retain that wrap; do not average 350° and 10° as south.

  3. Review terrain and air-mass hazards

    As required by the briefing or review

    Discuss how local terrain, obstructions, valley flow, fronts, stability and convection may change conditions at launch, aloft and at landing. Avoid thunderstorms, their developing hazards and outflow; no pilot rating makes thunderstorm exposure suitable for paraglider flight. An hourly forecast or a favorable average does not resolve rapidly changing conditions.

  4. Separate airspeed, ground motion and exposure

    As required by the briefing or review

    For a preflight learning case, distinguish drift at a held heading from the corrected heading needed for a ground track. Consider outdoor cold or heat exposure separately, using weather indices within their stated assumptions. Neither a wind vector nor an apparent temperature determines flight suitability.

  5. Make the local decision with clear reasons

    As required by the briefing or review

    Compare the actual conditions and trend with the school or site requirements, equipment instructions, your relevant experience and qualified local advice. Document the reason to proceed with a specific activity, wait, change the plan or stop. Do not substitute a universal gust spread or a calculated score for that assessment.

  6. Reassess changes and retain the debrief

    As required by the briefing or review

    Agree what changes require a fresh briefing or ending the activity and how communications will work. Afterward, compare recorded conditions with what occurred, note uncertainties and retain the instructor or pilot debrief. Preserve observation time and location when saving wind cases.

Weather changes across space and timeStandard

Large-scale forecasts and surface observations do not describe every launch, valley, ridge and landing area. Assess local terrain effects and evolving weather together.

Operating constraints are contextualStandard

Training wind and crosswind constraints belong to the school and site operating plan. This guide does not prescribe one gust spread for all pilots and sites.

Heat and cold indicesStandard

Wind chill and heat index describe specific apparent-temperature models. They are separate from turbulence, wing performance and the decision to fly.

  • Retain the direction sector

    A single mean direction can hide a crosswind or tailwind part of the observation.

  • Leave room to change the plan

    A cancelled or stopped session is a valid outcome when the conditions do not support the activity.

Safety Notes

  • Avoid thunderstorms, developing hazardous convection and associated outflow; do not rely on an invented rating exception.
  • Use weather arithmetic before flight and during debrief; it is not an onboard decision system.
