Greenhouse Irrigation and Delivery Checks

Group greenhouse crops by media and stage, choose a suitable delivery method, measure emitters, and keep moisture and water-quality records.

Workflow

  1. Group crops and observe the growing media

    Record crop, stage, container size, media, root development and greenhouse conditions for each group. Observe media moisture and drainage through representative cycles, using a consistent sensor or container-weight method. Include cooling and cleaning demand separately from crop irrigation.

  2. Select delivery and verify source quality

    Compare drip, hand watering, mist for the appropriate propagation purpose or recirculating subirrigation against the actual crop and layout. Obtain irrigation-water analysis and equipment requirements before selecting filtration or fertilizer treatment. Keep dissimilar containers on suitable separate zones.

  3. Measure delivery across a representative bench

    For a drip group, total nominal emitter flow and collect equal-duration samples from representative positions. Record pressure and keep low or zero catches. Check for displaced emitters, leaks, blocked lines and unequal wetting before changing controller settings.

  4. Trial the control settings against moisture

    Calibrate sensors for the media and placement using their instructions. Trial the proposed control sequence and observe wetting, drainage and crop response. Check how the controller responds to sensor failure, power loss or a closed water supply; record a manual backup procedure.

  5. Review water tests, filters and crop response

    Trend comparable media-moisture, water-use and water-quality measurements. Service filters and lines to the equipment instructions and the actual problem found. Keep chemical treatment decisions with the qualified operator, product instructions and water-analysis record, then repeat delivery tests after servicing.

Media and delivery systemStandard

Container size, media and crop conditions affect water absorption and irrigation frequency. Greenhouse irrigation can use surface delivery or subirrigation; select and trial the method for the actual crop group.

Water analysis is a separate measurementStandard

Laboratory analysis can characterize irrigation-water chemistry. On-site pH and electrical-conductivity checks require suitable instruments and consistent methods; a flow or storage calculator cannot measure them.

Repeatable flow checksStandard

Timed emitter collections provide a comparison of sampled delivery. They do not establish media moisture, salt targets, crop demand or treatment concentration.

  • Keep instruments distinct

    Flow, media moisture and EC answer different questions; keep their units and methods with the readings.

  • Test the backup

    Record what happens when a sensor or supply fails before relying on unattended operation.

Safety Notes

  • Use electrical equipment and protective arrangements suitable for wet growing areas; have wiring assessed by a qualified person.
  • Follow product instructions and required protective equipment for chemical treatment. Never mix cleaning or treatment chemicals by guesswork.
