Kitesurf Upwind Riding: Control, Drift and Exit Review

Plan supervised upwind practice with controlled riding prerequisites, actual wind and current observations, clear boundaries and a usable exit.

Workflow

  1. Review control before adding an upwind target

Have the instructor assess water starts, speed control, stopping and board recovery. Identify differences between riding directions. Do not make distance from shore or a target angle the first measure of progress when basic control still requires frequent assistance.

  2. Plan the corridor and drift response

Identify the intended corridor, traffic pattern and downwind exit. Review tide and current with local knowledge; the actual track over the ground need not match the direction the board points. Agree when failure to hold position ends the exercise.

  3. Retain the actual condition record

Record observations from a stated site or station with time and exposure. Use M for unavailable quantities in the weather log and keep forecasts separate. Add tide, current and local observations in notes; this tool does not calculate current drift or prove that a rider can return upwind.

  4. Practice short passes with feedback

Use the instructor’s method for coordinated kite control, posture and board edging. Review the actual path after each pass. If the rider stalls or loses control, reassess the exercise instead of forcing a more aggressive edge or chasing an assumed ideal angle.

  5. Reassess changes and take the exit

Monitor whether the agreed practice area and exit remain usable as conditions or fatigue change. Follow the stop decision before repeated attempts carry the rider beyond the boundary. Returning on a previous tack is not guaranteed by an earlier successful pass.

  6. Record direction-specific progress

Keep short notes for each tack: assistance, stopping control, observed drift and the exit used. Ask the instructor what must become repeatable before increasing distance. Treat staying upwind, changing direction and safely returning as related but distinct skills.

Use the exact equipment manual and qualified instruction for handling. The linked materials support preparation, topic progression and review; the checklist does not certify independent competence.

  • Keep the conditions with the record

Save the plan and record date, equipment, actual conditions and assistance needed. Recheck the checklist for each session; a completed earlier review does not approve today’s conditions.

Safety Notes

  • Use qualified kitesurf instruction and a session-specific assistance and exit plan. Do not practice in offshore winds or conditions beyond the lesson’s limits.
  • Keep people clear of powered lines and use the safety procedures taught for the exact equipment.
