Workflow

  1. Assign the first weeks of support

    Review and record

List the people who will handle meals, transport, household work, sibling care and appointment logistics. Separate offers of help from confirmed availability, and agree how to request changes. Make one task for each booking, conversation or document that still needs a response.

  2. Build an arrival and leave cash plan

    Review and record

Collect actual prices for essentials, care, transport and medical estimates. Enter recurring and one-time costs over your chosen planning period in the baby budget, then record reduced take-home pay separately. Place deposits, leave payments and bills on the household cash timeline to identify low balances.

  3. Confirm benefits and enrollment actions

    Review and record

Ask the employer or plan for leave eligibility, paid benefits, required documents, submission method and deadlines. Obtain the Summary of Benefits and Coverage and ask about the delivery facility and infant’s coverage. Record employer-plan and Marketplace instructions separately; their enrollment windows differ.

  4. Match care requirements with confirmed coverage

    Review and record

Write the hours when care is needed after leave, including travel and handoffs. Enter confirmed providers and caregivers on the same weekly basis and inspect uncovered intervals. Collect written care quotes with billable weeks, closures, fees, deposits and backup arrangements before comparing options.

  5. Verify essentials and a safe sleep space

    Review and record

Prioritize feeding supplies agreed with the care team, a suitable infant sleep space, transport and a small amount of clothing and changing supplies. Check product condition, instructions and recalls. Use observed diaper use to plan replenishment once it is available; record uncertain pre-birth quantities as purchasing assumptions.

  6. Review reserves and close the handover

    Review and record

Choose a household reserve target using your essential spending and support situation. If reviewing survivor protection, list actual obligations and dedicated resources rather than applying an income multiple. Confirm submitted forms, care bookings and post-birth appointments, then save and export the updated task list for the next review.

Reference Materials

Keep employer and Marketplace enrollment instructions separateStandard

An employer health plan must generally allow at least 30 days to request special enrollment after birth. The Marketplace generally allows a birth-related special enrollment request within 60 days, with coverage from birth; confirm the applicable plan and household rules.

Verify the current benefit yearStandard

Leave eligibility and paid benefits depend on the program. For 2026, the federal dependent-care assistance exclusion can be up to $7,500 ($3,750 if married filing separately), subject to eligibility and plan limits. It is an exclusion, not a guaranteed cash saving.

Check sleep and transport equipmentSafety

Use the infant sleep guidance and the manufacturer’s instructions. Check a used car seat against the complete NHTSA checklist, including its known crash history and recall status.

  • Separate money from timing

An expense total can fit the annual budget while a deposit arrives before leave pay. Keep the cash calendar alongside the estimate.

  • Buy for the next known need

Use an essentials list, quantities on hand and return terms to avoid treating every suggested product as a requirement.

Safety Notes

  • This is a family logistics and cost-planning workflow. Pregnancy, infant feeding, symptoms and recovery questions belong with the care team.
  • Do not mark an enrollment or booking complete until the responsible organization confirms it.
