Workflow

  1. Start with a question the learner wants to explore

    Choose a science, technology, engineering or mathematics question connected to the learner’s interests. Define an observable outcome, such as explaining a pattern, testing a model or improving a design. Match the task to current skills and accessibility needs, and decide what adult support and materials it requires.

  2. Choose reliable material and a workable task

    Use an appropriate curriculum, museum, library, university or agency resource and check what the activity actually asks the learner to do. For example, NASA’s learning collection offers activities across several ages and contexts. Check tool use, materials, supervision and data-sharing requirements before starting.

  3. Plan time, supplies and outside instruction

    Break the project into preparation, learning, building or solving, testing, analysis and revision. Estimate time from a short trial and fit it into actual sessions. Inventory available materials and price missing items. Where instruction is needed, obtain the provider’s real lesson terms rather than assuming a standard tutoring cost.

  4. Carry out the task and keep evidence

    Record the question, method, units, observations, failed attempts and changes. When testing a design, decide what is held constant and what is changed, and repeat observations where useful. Keep the learner’s explanation alongside results, including uncertainty and limitations.

  5. Discuss results and choose the next challenge

    Ask the learner to explain what the evidence supports, what remains uncertain and what could be improved. Seek feedback from a suitable teacher or mentor and select the next task accordingly.     Keep a small selection of dated work that shows the question, process, evidence and revision. Choose what can be shared with teachers or future programs, respecting other people’s work and the learner’s privacy. Review the learning plan as interests and skills change and back up the records.
