How it works

Slope angle and grade

Calculate geometric slope from vertical rise and horizontal run in the same length unit. A flat segment is valid. Geometry does not assign a ski rating, assess surface condition or determine whether a slope is suitable for a launch or landing.

Grade = 100 × rise/run; angle = atan(rise/run); sloping length = hypot(rise, run).

Rise and length from a slope angle

Translate an angle and horizontal run into rise, grade and sloping length. An angle in degrees is not a grade percentage.

Rise = run tan(angle); sloping length = run/cos(angle); grade = 100 tan(angle).
