How it works
English syllables start with a heuristic. Review numbers and abbreviations; corrections apply to every occurrence of the same normalized word. SMOG samples 30 complete sentence candidates.
  • Choose English prose independently of the site language. Non-Latin scripts do not receive these English formula scores.
  • Review the linked Fog exclusions and the actual word and sentence boundaries. Scores estimate surface features, not reader comprehension.
  • Copy includes formulas, sources and your corrections. Editing the source resets corrections and invalidates old export feedback.

How it works

English heuristic

Initial syllable estimates come from syllable 5.0.1. It uses pronunciation patterns and exceptions; it is not an audio transcription or a complete pronunciation dictionary.

Count every occurrence

The total adds each distinct word’s syllables multiplied by its occurrence count. Corrections apply to all occurrences of the same normalized word. Numbers and all-capital abbreviations wait for a spoken count.

Review in context

Different accents, names, abbreviations and words such as read or learned can need contextual interpretation. Review the actual spoken form. Editing the source resets corrections; Copy Stats records the current estimates and corrections.

FAQ

No. It is an English heuristic. Check names, specialist terms, regional pronunciation and poetic elision. You can enter a different spoken count for a word in the review table.

The same token can be spoken differently: 12 might be twelve or one two, and an abbreviation might be spoken as letters or as a word. Enter the spoken count you intend to use.

Each occurrence contributes. If recipe appears twice and its reviewed count is 3 syllables, those two occurrences contribute 6 syllables.

It counts estimated syllables. It does not identify stress patterns, meter, rhyme quality or how a performer will compress or extend a sound.

No. The English pronunciation model is not applied to non-Latin scripts. Use a language-specific pronunciation method for other languages; general word and character counts remain available.
