How it works

Weft Yardage

Picks per inch multiplied by width gives inches of weft per inch of weaving. Multiply by woven length and convert to yards.

Weft yards = PPI × Width (in) × Woven length (in) ÷ 36

Weft Take-Up and Shrinkage

Add 10–15% for weft take-up (over-and-under path) and wet finishing shrinkage.

Adjusted weft = Calculated weft × 1.10–1.15

Total Project Yarn

Sum warp and weft. If using different yarns, calculate and purchase each separately.

Total = Warp yards + Weft yards (same or different yarn)

Example Scenarios

Each 18×28 inches at 24 EPI, 24 PPI: ~25 yards warp + ~20 yards weft per towel × 4 = 180 yards total 8/2 cotton.

Warp: 14 yards gray wool. Weft: 8 yards burgundy for weft-faced sections — purchase yarns separately by calculated amounts.

Project needs 800 yards; cones are 840 yards (mini) or 2100 yards (standard). One standard cone covers project with plenty for sampling.

FAQ

Calculate warp and weft separately, then sum. Typical scarf: 15–20 yards warp + 10–15 yards weft. Blanket: 500–1500+ yards depending on size and yarn weight.

Warp runs lengthwise (beam to front); weft runs crosswise (shuttle passes). Weft consumption depends on PPI and width; warp depends on EPI and length plus loom waste.

Wet finishing shrinks most natural fibers 5–15%. Calculate finished dimensions then add shrinkage factor to warp length and weft yardage.

Add 10–15% beyond calculated amounts. Yarn dye lots change — buy all cones of one color from the same lot. Extra yarn allows sampling and future repairs.

Check yarn label for yards per pound (ypp) or yards per gram. 8/2 cotton ≈ 1680 ypp. Divide needed yards by ypp for poundage, then convert to cones.
